Books of 2016

2017 is already started, so the new book year too. It’s planned to read a lot of books – some classical works, some new things, and of course a little bit more of non-fiction. And to start this new book year well, I want to mention books which I have read in a magnificent 2016.

So books of 2016, let’s start:

  1. I began the 2016 year with a book “Grey” by E.L. James, which reveals the passionate story about the relationship between a young girl Anna and wealthy businessman Christian Grey, shown in her “Fifty Shades of Grey” book series. On this time the story is told by Christian.
  2. The post-industrial society in which books are not read, but burned, is described in the book of famous American writer Ray Bradbury “Fahrenheit 451”. I hope that our society will not come to such thing, however, we should read this book to know how not to do with books.
  3. The US “beat-literature” representative – Jack Kerouac and his famous work “On the road”. This story about the journey of two friends Sal and Dean across the USA is considered as autobiographical, and also it brought the author a worldwide fame and set a new rhythm in the literature.
  4. The next one is also partly autobiographical novel – “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts. This is a story about Lindsay Ford, who escaped from an Australian prison and hid in India, where he started a new life. “Shantram” – a colorful story about the meaning of life, love, and friendship that enhanced with culture and traditions of India and Afghanistan.
  5. “The Mountain Shadow” by G.D. Roberts is the continuation of the cult novel “Shantaram”, which tells us the fate of Australian Lin, better known in India as Shantaram. “The Mountain Shadow” – is new adventures and new friends on the main character’s way of love and faith.
  6. Another excellent book by Harper Lee“Go Set a Watchman”. Although this book was written before her legendary book “Kill a Mockingbird”, it was published only in 2015. This is a continuation of the story of Jean Louise Finch, who already lives in New York, but as always visited her father Atticus in native town Maycomb. This is a story about growing up and the perception of the world as it is, with all his righteousness and wickedness.
  7. Why years from 20 to 30 is so important, and how much they mean in our lives – told us a psychologist Meg Jay. In her book “The Defining Decade”, she shares her experience as a clinical psychologist and researchers on identity affirmation, choice and decision-making purposes. Though it is marked as a book for people 20+ aged, everyone will find there something interesting.
  8. Perhaps, the next book is known to all girls – Jojo Moyes “Me Before You”, since in summer 2016 there was its film adaptation. It is a romantic story about a cheerful and positive girl Louise Clark, who got a job to care about Will Traynor who became quadriplegic after a motorbike accident. An unexpected meeting, various adventures, and of course love, which overfills and inspires.
  9. The continuation of the touching story of Louise Clark in a book “After You” by Jojo Moyes. This time Louise helps a young girl to learn more about her father.
  10. Another book by the talented Jojo Moyes“One Plus One”. An interesting, romantic, and sometimes comic story of Jess Thomas and her two children. Although there is a black line in the life of the main characters, she bravely goes forward.
  11. Again the book by Jojo Moyes. On this time – her novel “The Last Letter from Your Lover”. This is a touching story about love, sustained over time. There are two intertwined eras – the present and 60 years of the 19th century. Two heroines, two life lines and of course love that makes happy. “The Last Letter from Your Lover” – a great novel for fans of romantic stories, courtship, and sensitive letters.
  12. The next book is “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl. This is a story about the adventures of a boy Charlie on a chocolate factory of eccentric confectioner Mr. Wonka. Really interesting and instructive book that is worth reading not only for kids but also for adults.
  13. A touching story about teenagers Hazel and Augustus. They both have cancer, but they do not give up, and take everything from life – even visit their beloved writer. About all of these are written in the book “The Fault in Our Stars” by an American author John Green.
  14. Another book by John Green“Looking for Alaska. This book, like the typical Green’s works, also about adolescent students who love to entertain and party, value the friendship and seek the love.
  15. “The Cuckoo’s Calling” – the first book of the series about private detective Cormoran Strike and his faithful assistant Robin Ellakot. This couple is a new “Sherlock and Watson” from the popular J.K.Rowling, who works under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. This skillfully written story with an interesting storyline that fans of the detective genre will definitely love.
  16. Robert Galbraith‘s second book in the series about Cormoran Strike – “The Silkworm”. This time the detective with his assistant investigating the murder of controversial writer Owen Quine. It seems like a typical plot, but there is a terrible murder and to find a killer will not be so easy.
  17. The third book by Robert Galbraith“Career of Evil”. On this time Cormoran Strike receives a strange package from an unknown person, and hear about a number of terrible murders of women. Could this be connected to the Strike’s past, or is this a revenge from any of his client? Intriguing plot and great detective line – as in the best detectives.
  18. Chocolate novel about love and chocolate – “Chocolate” by Joanne Harris. The main character Vian Roche together with her daughter Anouk arrives in a small town Laksne Su-Thann and opens a chocolate shop there. And all this takes place during fasting before Easter in the city where people do not like to attract attention. But Vian finds friends, and realizes that happiness is the most important thing in life.
  19. “Martin Eden” is Jack London‘s creative peak. This is a novel about the sailor Martin, who for the sake of love from Ruth, trying to achieve fame and become a famous writer. This story is a “tragedy of loner, trying to bring the truth to world”.
  20. “What Dreams May Come” – a novel by Richard Matheson that immediately became a bestseller and caused a large number of debates in literary and academic circles. And all of these because of the main theme of the work – life after death. Is there a heaven and hell, where a person gets after death, can there we meet our loved ones – all these and a soul touching story you will find in this book.
  21. In 2016, I discover for myself the famous author of historical thrillers – Dan Brown. I began this acquaintance with his book “Angels and Demons”, where the protagonist Robert Langdon tries to uncover a secret conspiracy of the Order of the Illuminati against the majestic Vatican. Historical facts, secrets, and mystery – all mingled harmoniously in this wonderful book.
  22. The second book in a series about a teacher of symbology Robert Langdon – “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown. It’s a story of the incredible investigation and stunning discovery of Crusades, the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Saint Graal.
  23. About the Masons, a symbol of wisdom and the path to it – Dan Brown described in his book “The Lost Symbol”. On this time Robert Langdon must unravel the secrets and find a wealth of Masons, and stop the massive exposure of their fraternity.
  24. The fourth book in a Robert Langdon series – Dan Brown “Inferno”. Overpopulation, global disease, and fights – our world is doomed to inevitable death. And at that time, Robert Langdon seeking answers to the question why he appeared in Florence and remembers nothing about the past two days, and even why he haunted by gunmen. The answer lies in a project of scientist Bertrand Zobrist, who created a thing that can destroy the world – and it is called Inferno.
  25. Informative instructions on how to distinguish our “must” and “should” in a book “The Crossroads of Should and Must” by Elle Luna. A writer, artist, and designer Elle Luna explains clearly and impressive what we do with our lives, and how to understand what we want to do and how to find our calling.
  26. “Polyglot” is a universal collection of tips on studying foreign languages from polyglot and language teacher Ekaterina Matveeva. In this book, she shares the tips and techniques used by herself and recommended to her students, reveals the secrets of how to make language learning more interesting and successful.
  27. Expected novelty by J.K. Rowling, co-authored with John Tiffany and Jack Thorne“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”. This is a play scenario, which tells of the events that unfold 19 years after winning the Battle of Hogwarts. Now Harry Potter is married, he is a father of three children and an employee of the Ministry of Magic, and his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. But sinister past comes to Potters’ life, and everything is flying upside down. This is a book which all fans of Harry Potter is waiting so long.
  28. Amazing addition to Harry Potter’s books – “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” by J.K. Rowling. This book is a guide to the world of magical beasts and creatures, whom we can find reading stories about Harry Potter. On the basis of this book, Rowling wrote the screenplay for the same name film, released in cinemas in autumn 2016.
  29. “The Girl on the Train” – the bestseller from Pola Hawkins, which was also filmed in 2016. This detective thriller in which the main character Rachel Watson, disappointed and abandoned, trying to uncover the disappearance of woman – Megan Hipvell. Maybe it helps her to reveal the truth and rebuild her own life.
  30. Kevin Alan Milne “The Winner’s Game” is a story about a family that is going through hard times: the older daughter needed the heart transplant, younger children are constantly quarreling, and marriage is bursting at the seams. Last hope is a family holiday in the grandmother’s house by the ocean, and an interesting “winner’s game”. This is an amazing story about understanding, kindness, gratitude and love.
  31. About habits, their functioning and impact on our lives Charles Duhigg wrote in his book “The Power of Habit”. This book is a global study of habits – as little personal habits, and organizational habits of modern companies and communities. On what pattern habits are formed, how to get rid of bad habits and create healthy new – the answers to these questions you will find in this fascinating book.
  32. If you want to add a little creativity and bright colors into your life, you should definitely read this excellent book – “Steal Like an Artist” by writer and artist Austin Cleon. The author shares the secrets that helped him and many people unleash their creativity to make their daily life and work more extraordinary and marvelous.
  33. Lauren Groff “Fates and Furies” – a best-selling novel about the relationship of man and woman in marriage, deeds and sacrifices they make for love. This is the story about Lotto and Matilda, and their marriage. But under the cover of happy marriage, there are a lot of mystery and intrigues.
  34. Novel “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult is an unusual story about the usual family. The youngest daughter seeking to defend her right to normal life, and appeals to the court. This book is about life, our decisions, and its consequences.
  35. Another great detective thriller by British writer Ruth Ware“In a Dark, Dark Wood”. This is the story about young writer Leonora Show, which takes the invitation to hen-party of her friend, with who she has not seen at least for 10 years. It sounds a bit strange, isn’t it? But she still goes to this party, wich took place in a modern glass house near the dark wood. And now the mystery begins – in a dark, dark night the murder happens…
  36. The problem of sexual exploitation of young girls is discussed in the book written by Iana Matei. She is a Romanian activist who founded Reaching Out Romania, an organization to find and rehabilitate victims of forced prostitution. In her book, published in France under the title “A vendre, Mariana, 15 ans”, she writes about her work as a psychologist and a social worker.
  37. The last book in 2016 was the interesting work of journalist Murray Carpenter “Caffeinated”. It reveals the essence of caffeine and its effect on our minds and bodies, and gives answers to the question of why we love so much to drink coffee, tea, and coke.
